Tafsir al-Rāzī says Allah swore by horses because in running they have praiseworthy qualities no other beast has; they serve for pursuit and retreat, for charging and wheeling away. It is also a reminder that one should keep them for that benefit, not for adornment and boasting.
Reflection: Whatever blessings we own, let us use them for benefit and obedience, not for show.

According to Ibn ‘Āshūr, qadḥ is striking one thing on another to draw fire; the running horse’s hooves strike hard stone and send out sparks. This is a figure for running with full effort and great speed.
Reflection: The horse runs until sparks fly for its master’s sake; how earnest is our own effort for the Lord Who gives us every blessing?

Tafsir al-Rāzī says the horses raided the enemy at dawn because at night they were in darkness and could see nothing, and by day people stand ready to defend themselves; but at that hour people are heedless and unprepared.

According to Ibn ‘Āshūr, “stirring up dust” means the horses stirred dust up from the ground through the force of their running; ithārah is stirring up, and naqʿ is dust.
Reflection: Every earnest effort leaves a mark; let us make sure the marks of our steps in this world are marks of good.

According to Ibn ‘Āshūr, verses 4 and 5 come as past-tense verbs, not as descriptive forms like the three verses before them, a sign that the speech moves from the oath to telling the outcome: the goal of that running was reached, reaching “the midst of the enemy host”.
Reflection: Earnest effort brings results; let us keep up our good efforts until they reach their goal.

According to Ibn ‘Āshūr, kanūd (ingratitude to one’s Lord) lies in human nature in varying measure, since it springs from putting oneself first; only watchfulness over the self and remembering the rights of others can repel it. Part of kanūd is paying little heed to whether a blessing is spent on what it was given for.
Reflection: Let us ask ourselves what we used our time, wealth and health for today.

Tafsir al-Rāzī reports two views. First, man himself is witness to his own ingratitude, either because it is too plain to deny, or because he will confess his sins in the Hereafter. Second, Allah is witness to it, a warning since He counts all his deeds.
Reflection: Deep down we know when we fall short in gratitude; let us heed that inner voice before it becomes a witness.

According to Ibn ‘Āshūr, al-khayr here is wealth and shadīd means miserly; the meaning is that human nature holds stinginess out of love of wealth and of increasing it, and love of wealth drives one to hold back kindness from others.
Reflection: Love of wealth left unchecked breeds stinginess; let us train ourselves to give, even a little, so our hearts are not bound to wealth.

Renungan: Mari kita bersedia untuk hari kebangkitan sebagaimana kita bersungguh-sungguh menyiapkan keperluan dunia.Tafsir al-Rāzī says “is turned out” means raised, stirred and brought forth. Then it draws a lesson: an expectant mother prepares clothes for her baby, sure that what is in her womb will come out; so will not what is in the earth’s belly also be brought out, and where is our preparation?
Reflection: Let us prepare for the Day of rising as earnestly as we prepare for the needs of this world.
