According to Ibn ‘Āshūr, whoever begins with the basmalah intends that the whole of that deed be joined to the blessing of Allah’s name.
Reflection: Let us say the basmalah mindfully at the start of every task, and let its blessing stay with us until the task is done.

Terjemahan: Segala puji tertentu bagi Allah, Tuhan yang memelihara dan mentadbirkan sekalian alamTranslation: All praise belongs only to Allah, the Lord Who sustains and governs all the worlds,

Nota bahasa: لِلَّهِ (ayat 2).Language note: لِلَّهِ (verse 2).
لِ means “to/for” and is coloured red because it is a particle (preposition). Here it carries the sense of exclusivity (lām al-ikhtiṣāṣ): together with the ال (of genus) in ٱلْحَمْدُ, it gives the sense that the whole genus of praise belongs to Allah alone. That is why the verse translation reads “All praise belongs only to Allah”. The word “only” expresses this exclusivity; it is not a separate Arabic word. Ibn ‘Āshūr (al-Taḥrīr wa al-Tanwīr) says: “الْحُكْمَ بِاخْتِصَاصِ جِنْسِ الْحَمْدِ بِهِ تَعَالَى لِوُجُودِ لَامِ تَعْرِيفِ الْجِنْسِ فِي قَوْلِهِ: الْحَمْدُ وَلَامِ الِاخْتِصَاصِ فِي قَوْلِهِ: لِلَّهِ” (the ruling that the genus of praise belongs exclusively to Him, the Exalted, comes from the lām that defines the genus in His words al-ḥamd and the lām of exclusivity in His words lillāh) (1/160 · Shamela ↗).

Antara huraian ar-Rāzī: dengan “al-ḥamdu lillāh” (segala puji tertentu bagi Allah) seolah-olah hamba berkata, “Sama ada Engkau memberiku atau tidak, nikmat-Mu sampai kepada seluruh alam, dan Engkau berhak menerima pujian yang agung.”
Renungan: Mari kita memuji Allah bukan hanya ketika hajat kita dipenuhi, tetapi dalam setiap keadaan.
Among al-Rāzī’s explanations: in saying “al-ḥamdu lillāh” (all praise belongs only to Allah) the servant is as if saying, “Whether You give me or not, Your blessings reach all the worlds, and You deserve the greatest praise.”
Reflection: Let us praise Allah not only when our wishes are granted, but in every state.

Menurut Ibn ‘Āshūr, sifat ar-Raḥmān (Yang Maha Pemurah) disebut selepas “Tuhan yang memelihara dan mentadbirkan sekalian alam” untuk mengingatkan bahawa nikmat-nikmat besar itu sampai kepada kita dengan cara yang lembut, mudah dan tanpa menyusahkan.
Renungan: Mari kita lihat suruhan Allah sebagai rahmat, dan berlembut pula dengan orang di bawah jagaan kita.
According to Ibn ‘Āshūr, al-Raḥmān follows “the Lord Who sustains and governs all the worlds” to point out that these great blessings reach us through gentleness, ease and freedom from hardship.
Reflection: Let us see Allah’s commands as mercy, and be gentle in turn with those in our care.

Kata ar-Rāzī, hak-hak Allah dibina atas kemaafan kerana Dia tidak berhajat kepada sekalian alam, manakala hak-hak sesama manusia itulah yang mesti kita jaga dengan teliti.
Renungan: Sebelum tiba hari Pembalasan, mari kita langsaikan hutang, pulangkan hak orang dan memohon maaf daripada sesiapa yang pernah kita sakiti.
Al-Rāzī says the rights of Allah rest on forgiveness, for He has no need of the worlds, while the rights of people are what we must carefully guard.
Reflection: Before the Day of Recompense, let us settle our debts, return what is owed, and seek pardon from anyone we have hurt.

Terjemahan: Engkaulah sahaja (Ya Allah) Yang Kami sembah, dan kepada Engkaulah sahaja kami memohon pertolonganTranslation: You alone (O Allah) do we worship, and You alone do we ask for help.

Nota bahasa: إِيَّاكَ (ayat 5).Language note: إِيَّاكَ (verse 5).
إِيَّاكَ is the pronoun “You” as an object, and is coloured green because it is an ism (noun). Normally the object comes after the verb; here it is placed before نَعْبُدُ (we worship) and نَسْتَعِينُ (we ask for help). This word order carries the sense of exclusivity: worship and the request for help are directed to Allah alone. That is why the verse translation reads “You alone”, and this card writes “(alone)” in brackets: “alone” is the meaning of the word order, not a separate Arabic word. Al-Zamakhsharī (al-Kashshāf) says: “وتقديم المفعول لقصد الاختصاص” … “والمعنى نخصك بالعبادة، ونخصك بطلب المعونة” (the object is placed first for the purpose of exclusivity … the meaning is: we single You out for worship, and we single You out in asking for help) (1/13 · Shamela ↗). The same holds for other cards marked “(alone)”: “alone” there is a meaning that comes from the structure of the sentence (for example a word placed first), not a separate Arabic word.

Menurut Ibn ‘Āshūr, setelah memuji Allah dan menyebut sifat-sifat-Nya yang agung, renungan si pemuji sampai ke puncaknya; dia merasakan dirinya berada di hadapan Tuhannya lalu terus berbicara kepada-Nya.
Renungan: Apabila tiba “Iyyāka na‘budu” (Engkaulah sahaja yang kami sembah) dalam solat, mari kita rasakan bahawa kita sedang bercakap terus dengan Allah.
According to Ibn ‘Āshūr, after praising Allah and describing His great attributes, the worshipper’s reflection reaches its peak; he senses himself in his Lord’s presence and turns to address Him directly.
Reflection: When we reach “Iyyāka na‘budu” (You alone do we worship) in prayer, let us feel that we are speaking to Allah Himself.

Menurut Ibn ‘Āshūr, menyebut “jalan orang-orang yang Engkau telah kurniakan nikmat kepada mereka” membuka jalan untuk doa dimakbulkan, kerana orang yang pemurah, jika dikatakan kepadanya, “Berilah aku sebagaimana engkau memberi si fulan,” akan lebih tergerak kemurahannya.
Renungan: Mari kita berdoa dengan penuh harap, sambil meneladani orang-orang soleh yang telah Allah kurniakan nikmat.
According to Ibn ‘Āshūr, naming “the path of those whom You have blessed with Your favour” prepares the way for the prayer to be answered, for when you say to a generous person, “Give me as you gave so-and-so,” it stirs his generosity all the more.
Reflection: Let us pray with hope, and follow the righteous whom Allah has favoured.
